That of data it seems a mania, but in fact they are important and there are sectors in which this is evidence. It is easy to connect the data to the economy, for example, and to fields in which we often play with numbers and graphics, but the concept of agridata but this does not mean that it is less interesting and impactful. Rather! If we think about it, one evolution in the agricultural sector it reaches us directly on the plate and therefore affects all of us, even those who live off the economy and stock market indices. Let's explore what agridata are and what they are for.

Agridata: meaning

The word agridata comes from synthesis between Data and Agriculture, it is about applying Big Data to the Agrifood world, a path that recently more and more realities, even small ones, are undertaking and that promises well. This involves a change of mentality and also of structures and devices, data becomes the fulcrum of companies and the market and it is not always easy to accept it, even more difficult to ride the trend. If you can do it, however, the results can be seen, even from an economic point of view.

The protagonism of Big Data has been known for some time in the tertiary sector and services, starting from Finance and Fintech, Banking, Insurance. It has also taken hold in the media sector and gradually spread to the manufacturing sector with the spread ofInternet of Things and with Industry 4.0. Today, however, we can also see the first results of theAgridata or the big data used to plan, design, create agricultural products or activities.

Agridata: observatory

To study and support the phenomenon ofAgriculture 4.0 in Italy there isSmart Agrifood Observatory, born from the collaboration between the Digital Innovation Observatories of the Politecnico di Milano. This reality is a reference for those who are taking their first steps trying to understand how data can be useful to those who cultivate the fields.

From the observatory comes empirical research that is needed for spreading a new culture based on Digital Innovation, The RISE Research & Innovation for Smart Enterprises Laboratory of the University of Brescia was also involved, engaged in research and transfer of know-how to companies.

Agridata: solutions

The solutions thatAgridata provides are not magic formulas that can change the fate of a company or an entire sector, they are indications and information extracted from big data which, if used well, can indeed change the reality of the facts. We therefore understand the solutions as one tool that, in the hands of farmers, can be revolutionary as well as useless.

What we are trying to do, in Italy, but not only, is to materialize Smart Agrifood or Smart Agriculture projects based on data enhancement with the collaboration of those who have always dealt with Big Data. It is important that a magical interaction takes place between very different fields that must learn to work as a team in order not to miss this important opportunity. We do not forget to point out that the solutions obtained with the use of agridata are often environmentally friendly and aimed at minimizing the environmental impact of agriculture.

Agridata: mapping

Map, collect data, give them meaning. This is also done by those who work in theAgrifood which is based on some essential actions such as precisely data acquisition, their management and integration and processing with a concrete analysis that compares the results obtained with other series of data from different sources.

Sensors are essential to map and many perspectives open up in this field, innovation in the field of machinery and equipment it is one of the most interesting and concrete sectors that the Agridata generously nourishes. Now let's try map the type of data that can be captured. In general, the types are the following. There is meteorological data, field data, crop data, equipment data, machinery data, warehouse data and operational data. It is the same data that also help him development of organic and sustainable agriculture

Agridata and privacy

By processing data, linked yes to the soil and plants, but also to people, theAgridata must take into account the issue of privacy, not that of vegetables that have not so far created problems in this sense, but that of farmers or of who is the "owner" of agricultural data.

As part of’Agrifood, as in others, it is good to make a distinction between personal data and anonymous data, the former refer to a natural person and in fact if it is data on a product, it is not linked to those who cultivated it. We can talk about anonymous data, therefore, but as far as machinery or equipment is concerned, the same reasoning cannot be made. These devices are more closely connected to who owns them and who uses them, so the privacy issue. In order to use some data in the Granted, a non-trivial privacy policy to be understood must be respected, this is also a challenge that is worth facing.
